How to Grow and Accelerate Your Career: Your Next Steps
Stop talking about what you want to do in your job and career and start taking action. Identify your short- and long-term career goals and create a plan to reach them. This will help you stay focused and motivated, and it will give you a clear path to follow.
Accelerating your career takes time and effort, and there are no shortcuts. By focusing on developing your skills, building a network, setting goals, seeking out mentors, being proactive and continuing to learn, you can put yourself on the road to success.
Find a path to career growth
Find out which skills are in demand in your field and focus on mastering them. There are online courses for almost everything. If you prefer to learn in a different way, read articles and books, and take part in discussions relevant to your job and the direction you are heading in.
There is no reason to do this alone. Start building a network of like-minded, success-oriented people. Connect with professionals in your industry or in the field you want to pursue, join professional organizations and take part in online forums and groups. Nurturing these relationships will help you gain access to jobs and opportunities. Look for mentors who are experienced, respected leaders in your space. They can share valuable lessons from their own professional journey and advice to help you navigate the challenges of your career.
Move up within your company
Make the most of your time in your current role. Look for ways to take on more responsibility at work, or volunteer for projects that will let you gain new skills and experience.
Develop your skills. In addition to technical competencies, developing your soft skills, such as communication, teamwork and problem-solving, is essential. The ability to write well, speak intelligently and communicate clearly and effectively with people is valued by most organizations. These soft skills will make you a more well-rounded and attractive candidate to employers.
Act as if you're already there
Behave as though you have already arrived where you want to be. Talk and act like a leader. Offer to help your colleagues, willingly take on complex tasks and make your boss look good without being a sycophant. Get to work a little early every day and stay late if you want to make your mark quickly.
Embrace change
Accept that the business world changes fast and that you will need to adapt constantly. Become an expert in your field. The more you know about your area, the more valuable you will be to employers. Read books and articles, attend conferences and take online courses to stay up to date with the latest trends.
Get to know people in your field and let them know you are looking for work. You never know where your next opportunity will come from. Be persistent and don't give up on your dreams. It may take time and effort, but if you keep at it, you will eventually reach your goals.
Take a step to better yourself
Changing jobs has become socially acceptable. If you're unhappy, move on. The workforce is in, and will remain in, a period of rapid change. The days of working for a single company for your entire career are gone. Corporate pensions are a thing of the past.
You have to rely on yourself and follow your own path. Chances are you will have several different careers over your lifetime. Within those careers, you will change jobs, get laid off and sometimes find yourself stuck in part-time work. If you are timid and fearful, the world will eat you alive. You need to teach yourself to be strong and not be intimidated by whatever the future brings.
Ignore distractions
Focus on yourself and tune out the noise. So much time is wasted arguing with strangers on X (Twitter) or Facebook. Has anyone ever said on social media, "Thank you! You're very persuasive. You've completely changed my mind on this topic"? Arguing with, or even just reading or being around, people who live to fight, shout and accuse is a waste of time. Focus your time and energy on productive activities.
Keep learning
Read voraciously and keep learning. To stay competitive, you need to keep up with every development in your field and with new trends that could affect your career. By learning constantly, you will stay ahead of the crowd that chooses to stand still.
Embrace change. You will need to be flexible and go with the flow. Instead of resisting and ignoring your new reality, consider how you can benefit from the new circumstances. Change brings opportunity, if your eyes are open to it. How many times has something bad happened to you, only for it to lead you to a better place? It happens all the time. There is always an opportunity, but you have to be receptive, bold and ready to seize your chance to succeed.
