How Do You Know It's Time to Change Jobs? 6 Telltale Signs
At some point in our working lives, all of us have gone through periods when our job satisfaction reached new highs or plummeted to record lows. The question is: how do you tell the difference between a few passing, perhaps subjective, drawbacks and something deeper, something that means it's time to make a career change?
Do you dread going to work?
However much you love your profession and your workplace, it's natural to dislike Mondays. But what if it's now more than that? If you spend your Sundays dreading the week ahead instead of relaxing, or if you feel anxious before every working day, it may be time to take a hard look at the reasons behind this feeling and, above all, at what you need to change to rediscover the joy of going to work.
Do you envy other people's success?
Some periods of our professional lives are less fulfilling than others. But if you see someone earning a living doing what they love and your first thought is, "Why can they do that and I can't?", it could be a sign that you really are looking for something more rewarding.
Have you stopped thinking ahead and dreaming big?
It's easy for goals and aspirations to take a back seat when you're busy with day-to-day work. But if you find you've completely lost sight of your long-term objectives or the dreams you once had, it may be worth stepping off the carousel of daily tasks and revisiting them to see whether some changes are in order.
Are you never challenged?
If you've been with the same company for a long time, you may find yourself doing the same tasks over and over. You might be seen as having a particular set of skills and competencies, with no real chance to go beyond them. It's wonderful to be recognised by colleagues and managers for what you do well, but if you're stuck in a rut and trapped in your comfort zone, your ability to grow can be limited.
Do you have no work-life balance?
Do you feel you spend every minute working or thinking about work? No time left for friends or for the things you enjoy? Balance can be hard to achieve at times, but it's important to be able to switch off, spend time with friends or family, or simply enjoy being yourself outside of work.
Do you feel unheard or unappreciated?
Do you feel your work is considered worthless? That can be frustrating and leave you feeling discouraged. If you work hard and are dedicated to your job, you deserve to be treated well and to feel that your contribution is valuable and appreciated by your colleagues.
If these signs ring true, it may be worth exploring other career options. Taking the leap into something new can be stressful and overwhelming, but the right approach, carefully planned and executed, can move your career forward and help you regain a sense of fulfilment in your working life.
