Interview with a Recruiter: How Hiring Really Works Today

Recruitment has become increasingly complex in today's job market. With new technologies, legal complexity and fierce competition for top talent, recruiters must constantly adapt and stay on top of the latest trends and techniques. In this interview, we talk to an experienced recruiter with more than 10 years in the field, who shares how they tackle these challenges and find the best candidates for open positions.

How do you keep up with the ever-changing job market and the latest recruitment trends?

"As a professional recruiter with over 10 years of experience, I always make it a priority to stay up to date with the latest job market trends and recruitment techniques. I attend conferences and workshops, read industry publications, and build and maintain relationships with other recruiters to stay informed. Recruiting is like a game of Tetris: you just have to keep your eyes open and be ready to pivot at any moment."

How do you make sure you find the best candidates for a role?

"I've developed a systematic approach to sourcing, screening and interviewing candidates to make sure I find the right match for both the position and the company. I also make a point of checking references and running background checks to get a complete picture of a candidate. It's like a game of chess: you have to think ahead and have a strategy."

How do you handle the growing number of CVs and applications you receive for open positions?

"I've implemented various technology tools to help me manage the high volume of CVs and applications I receive. I also make sure to prioritise and review the most relevant CVs first."

How do you navigate the legal complexities of recruitment, such as anti-discrimination laws?

"I keep up to date with the latest recruitment-related laws and regulations and make sure I comply with them throughout the hiring process. I also document every step of the hiring process to protect both myself and the company. You have to know the rules to play it safe."

How do you handle the pressure to fill open positions quickly?

"I've developed a sense of urgency in my work and I make sure I have a full pipeline of potential candidates so I can fill open roles quickly. I also communicate regularly with hiring managers to make sure we're on the same page."

How do you handle rejecting candidates?

"I understand that not every candidate is right for every position, and I treat rejection as a learning opportunity. I also make sure to give candidates feedback and stay in touch with them for future opportunities."

How do you deal with the growing competition for top talent in today's job market?

"I make sure to set myself and the company apart by highlighting our unique culture and the benefits we offer employees. I also make sure we have a strong employer brand and that I'm active on social media. And remember, recruiting is like musical chairs: you have to be ready for the moment the music stops."

After speaking with our guest, it's clear that recruitment isn't for the faint-hearted. But with the right approach, tools and mindset, recruiters can navigate the complexities of today's job market and find the best talent for their companies. The key takeaway from our conversation is that recruiters need to stay informed, stay adaptable and keep a sense of humour. As our recruiter put it, "Recruiting is like a game – you have to have fun with it."

It isn't about spreadsheets, PowerPoint slides or CVs. It's about people, and about how you're going to influence their lives.
